This huge stadium towers to five storeys at its highest point and features a translucent Teflon roof which shelters almost all the stadium's seats.
The curves of the roof are considered reminiscent of swans landing on the nearby Toyanogata lagoon, giving rise to the stadium's nickname: Niigata Stadium Big Swan.
Situated amongst rugged mountains featuring internal plateaus, there was a time when the Niigata prefecture was one of Japan's most inaccessible.
It also features some of the country's most striking scenery, from snow to beaches, rugged coastline and grassy plains.
The capital, Niigata City, is located at the mouth of the Shinano River and is the largest port of the Japan Sea coast.
