Ibaraki

Ibaraki Prefectural Kashima Soccer Stadium

Matches

2/06: Argentina v Nigeria
5/06: Germany v Ireland
8/06: Italy v Croatia

Perhaps the most unusual feature of the Ibaraki World Cup stadium is the statue of Brazilian legend Zico which watches over it.

This is not as bizarre as it sounds - Zico played here for J-League team Kashima Antlers and is a local hero.

Very European in design, the stadium was only given the go-ahead to host World Cup matches after undergoing a major refurbishment to bring it up to FIFA's minimum capacity of 40,000.

Ibaraki itself is a region rather than a city and is situated just north of Tokyo and while it has a reputation as a centre of excellence in scientific research it is also an area of great natural beauty.

Its attractions include mountains, lakes, lagoons and beaches.
