Search Tips

Apostrophes

If you are searching for a term that includes an apostrophe, leave the apostrophe out when you type in the word. For example, if you want to look at the entry for barker's nest, just key in barkers nest.

Wildcard Search

You can use the following characters to conduct a wildcard search:

?   can stand for one or more characters, or no character at all. If you wanted to   find every entry that ended with dog, you would search for ?dog. This would yield the   following results:

  British bulldog
  Dapto dog
  dog
  Gosford dog
  Spotty Dog

#   stands for a single character only. If you enter b#n, the result you will receive is 'bun'. However, if you enter b?n, you will get any headword that begins   with b and ends with n (such as 'bevan', 'boon' and 'bobby pin'), regardless of   how many characters there are in between.

You can use the # character more than once in a search. For example, you can search on s#o##a and get the result 'skozza'.
