Hosted by the enthusiastic James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors highlights the brightest new inventions in Australia.
Tonight's show features new ideas on how to stop ATM ram raiders in their tracks, save sea birds and turtles from long line fishing, and take the hard work out of therapeutic massage.
Deciding the winner of these three inventions are engineer James Bradfield Moody, science journalist Bernie Hobbs, and designer Alison Page.
Inventions featured on the program:
Invention 1 - RAMINATOR by inventor Richard Gould from NSW
Being hit by two tonnes of fast moving four wheel drive is enough to shock most ATM machines right out of the ground. But Richard Gould has found a way to defeat the massive energy generated in a ram raid by redirecting and absorbing it. His Raminator is a clever metal plate which absorbs heavy impact by tilting the ATM over on an angle. Even better, repeated ramming results in the vehicle riding up over the ATM which redirects the shock of each impact and leaves the ATM bolted firmly in place. Raminator - ram raiders won't be back.
Invention 2 - SMART HOOK by inventor Hans Jusseit from QLD
It's estimated that 100,000 albatrosses die each year from being caught on long line fishing hooks. Retired fisherman Hans Jusseit wants to put an end to this tragic loss with his Smart Hook. It's a small metal shield that covers a baited hook. Whilst in place, the Smart Hook shield stops any creature from being able to be caught. But, as the fishing line sinks into the water a special pin begins to dissolve and releases the shield once it is below the depth that sea birds can dive. Smart Hook - saves sea birds from long line fishing.
Invention 3 - BODY SPANNER by inventors Corey Mouatt and Dirk Harm from QLD
Everyone likes being in the hands of a therapeutic masseur, but we seldom think about the ongoing wear and tear that those same hands can suffer as a result of all the good work they do. The Body Spanner is designed to take the hard hand work out of massage. Its inventors, physiotherapists Corey Mouatt and Dirk Harm have packed a vast array of massage, stretching and resistance workout functionality into one easily transportable unit. Their invention can be used by both professional therapists and by individuals in their own home. Body Spanner - takes the hard work out of massage.
The New Inventors will be repeated on ABC2 - Friday, August 22 at 4:30pm
