The Behind the News reporters are the people you hear - and sometimes see - on the show every week. We might talk about sport, science, new inventions, animals, music, health and even politics sometimes!
That's a good thing about being a reporter - you get to report on anything and everything. One week it could be why video gamers are annoyed with movie makers the next why diabetes is on the rise. Sometimes you need to cover two or three different issues in the one show.
The reporter's job begins with deciding exactly what stories will be on BtN each week. We decide that, by keeping up with what's happening in the world - reading newspapers, watching the news, talking to children and experts, listening to the radio, and surfing the net. Patrick, our Producer, and Carol, our Education Advisor, also help us decide what issues are interesting and worth reporting on.
Once we've decided what we'll report on, we have to start research, research and more research. If we do a story about politics or science, should we just have interviews of people talking about things? Probably not! So, we have to track down the best pictures available, and ask our Graphics Artist, Ruth, to draw diagrams or charts or other pictures for us.
We look at the vision we already have and plan to film anything else we need.
Once we have drafts of our stories, we go out with a camera person and sound recordist to film some segments. We might ask a group of children to give us their opinion about an issue or film a role-play to explain a difficult concept.
After the research and filming are out of the way, we edit the story again - making sure all the information is balanced and correct, and that all the pictures help tell the story. That's where the editors come in - they're experts at putting all the pictures together.
The presenter goes into make-up on Monday mornings and records the links on our virtual set.
When it's all done, and the show has gone to air, we get together and decide what we're going to do for the next program. And then it all starts again!
