Darrell Scott { Modern Hymns }

Darrell Scott is living proof that a ‘talented non-conformist’ can enjoy success, even in today’s Nashville. He has won more than one national award for ‘Songwriter of the Year’, but other great North American songsters wrote everything on his Modern Hymns. Darell is a superbly soulful singer and multi-instrumentalist. With top-shelf accomplices, he does wonderful, non-imitative, oft-surprising, but always-appropriate things to Joni, Bob, Kris, Leonard, Paul et al... including some writers whose surnames you’d not so easily guess!

( utterly unlike any other version of the much-covered song, but serves its lyric, perfectly. Darrell’s up-up-ole-timey-cum-quasi-bluegrass version features his lead vocal and guitar, with Del McCoury’s harmony, and a v hot little string-band. Del's son Ronnie McCoury is the mandolinist,Stuart Duncan the fiddler, Dirk Powell plays banjo and Danny Thompson the double-bassist. Dirk and Danny are present throughout this CD. Tom Rush’s {very different} version made this song famous, before Mitchell had made her first album - which did not include this song.

Dobro, mandolin and violin co-star with her remarkable vocal. This was the second of only two takes - no overdubs. To the best of my knowledge, Renee had never before attempted this song. (spare , wryly poignant, 1999-vintage song about his own childhood, his father, their relationship and dad’s guitar. Darrell’s deep male voice and ac guitar w Tim O’ Brien’s higher voice and mandolin. An essentially-true tale. As children Darrell and his brother destroyed dad’s guitar by trying to use it as a boat. The guitar was not really a Hummingbird - it was a cheaper guitar that dad had painted to make it look like the kind of guitar he could not afford. In 2002 -circa four decades on from the events sung of here - the adult Darrell bought his father a real, 1963-vintage Hummingbird

The Presley’s version was the top-seller of 1956 and Elvis’s first number 1 single. Arguably, the first ’totally adult’ pop/rock hit song: as unremittingly dark as a deep delta blues and a million miles from puppy dogs in windows, purple people-eaters and surfer dudes and babes.
