Lionel Loueke
|
Jazz guitar’s rising star grew up in Benin. Lionel Loueke has also lived and studied in other parts of Africa and in Paris. His musical world is not just ‘jazz.’ He is, however, American-resident and already a refreshing force in American jazz. Karibu is at core a trio set of new music. Most of the composed notes are the leader’s. His bassist and drummer are, respectively, Swedish-Italian and Hungarian. Loueke’s guests are jazz icons who have already employed and championed him: saxophonist Wayne Shorter and pianist Herbie Hancock. Says Hancock, ‘I haven’t found anybody that’s excited me this much in a long time.’

LIONEL LOUEKE - ’KARIBU’
6: 45
( much brighter mood than the song usually has, with an Afro-cum-Brazilian accent. No words, but the West African leader { Louke is from Benin } does mouth-percuss and wordlessly-vocalise a-la-Benson, as well as playing very nimble acoustic guitar. His trio’s other members are Hungarian-born drummer Ferenc Nemeth and Swedish-Italian bassist Massimo Biolcati )

LIONEL LOUEKE - ’KARIBU’
6: 50
( progressively more interesting as it proceeds and the temperature-tension rises. Lots of interesting interplay between the players. In addition to the instruments/musicians as @ 2208 above, this has the piano of a fully-engaged, really-’there’ Herbie Hancock )

ANGELIQUE KIDJO - ’DJIN DJIN’
3: 45
(Rousing, overtly African, with vocals shared between the leader from Benin and Amadou and Mariam - a blind, husband-wife duo from Mali, with whom Angelique co-wrote it. The lyric attacks Africa’s wealthy, corrupt and indifferent, but refuses to accept their cynicism. The key line translates as ’human, kindness, I still believe in you.’ Most prominent instrument/player is uncredited: definitely a kora and I think played by Mamadou Diabate. Lionel Louke plays guitar, but the rough-toned elec guitar soloist is Amadou.

3: 26
( previously unissued 1968 recording { recorded for ’ Soul ’ 69’ , but not included }, co-produced by Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd. Understandably, Wexler said {nearly four decades later} ’I’m amazed that the track never made the record’ . Aretha in sauntering-relaxed mode, with excellent big-band that includes assorted jazz legends. Little Willie John { like Aretha, from Detroit } had the 1958 hit version of this song ’ Jerry Wexler - the man who invented the term ’rhythm and blues’ - died on Friday {15.08.08}, aged 91.
