BHP is the world's biggest miner, and a business that many of us have long known as 'The Big Australian'.

As the commodities boom has gathered pace, the term 'big' almost undersells the scope of the company's operations, or its profit.

Its annual results are due out on Monday and expectations are for a net profit in excess of 17 billion Australian dollars.
