Director's Cut – extended interviews

John Weiley

John WeileyAustralian John Weiley is a rare being: a filmmaker who is also a tech-head. He put giant cameras under the Antarctic ice to make the ground-breaking Imax film Antarctica (one of the few Australian films to make $100 million worldwide). He also persuaded NASA to put Imax cameras on its satellites to capture closer images of the sun.

Weiley actually built the IMAX Cinema at Darling Harbour in Sydney -- and sold it on opening night! As the world’s biggest screen celebrates its twelfth anniversary, John Weiley talks with Julie Rigg about immersive cinema, 3D and the future of the digital image. Can the silicon chip hold enough information? [find out more..]

Serge Bozon

Serge Bozon’s La France is about a group of French soldiers in World War I, wandering the countryside near the front lines. We don’t know at first where they’re headed, what their mission is—but they’re joined by a young woman, disguised as a boy, whose objective is clear: she’s trying to reach her husband’s regiment and find out why he doesn’t want to receive her letters anymore. It’s like a road movie set in fields and forests, crossed with a musical as the soldiers break into wistful love songs composed in a sixties pop style (director Serge Bozon is a great fan of the decade). The result is a highly original, poetic war movie—up there with the best in the genre.

Jason Di Rosso spoke to Serge at the 2008 Melbourne International Film festival.
