Meet the listeners - Melbourne Olympics volunteers

Behind the massive organisational effort of the Olympics are the workers, a big group of which are volunteers, the vital cogs that turn the Olympic wheel.

For the Beijing games, prospective volunteers were required to sit an exam and, depending on their role, put through an intensive training course.

But what was it like back in 1956 at the Melbourne Olympics?

Meet the Listener guests Dinah Whittaker and Jessie Bull were volunteers at the Melbourne games. Dinah was a nursing sister to the athletes and Jessie was a driver for the Russian team.
