Nick Xenophon: Senate Independent
The Democrats are a spent force -- but two senators, Steve Fielding and Nick Xenophon, will play a key role in the new Senate.
Nick Xenophon is the first independent senator to be elected from South Australia after a decade in the state parliament.
Best known for his anti-pokies campaign, Nick Xenophon is in a strong bargaining position as the government works to pass its legislation.
He wants government support for controls on gambling and for federal regulation of the Murray Darling.
