Plan to save the lower Murray

Despite what any Senate inquiry may propose, the grim prospect is that significant flows of freshwater will not reach the Coorong and lower lakes on the Murray River for at least several years.

So a group of ecologists and water scientists in South Australia have devised a radical plan to help save some of the region's key ecological values. The plan involves draining Lake Albert to create a seasonal swamp, and also engineering a freshwater refuge in Lake Alexandrina. It's been drafted by Associate Professor David Paton from Adelaide University, who says he's sick of the politics and point scoring that have robbed the lower Murray of freshwater, but that all is not lost.
