Emergency Survival Kit

Ideally, prepare your kit with all the following items, or at least make a list so you will know where to find them quickly in your home.
  • Battery-operated radio (with spare batteries)
  • Torch (with spare batteries), candles and waterproof matches
  • Strong shoes, leather gloves, hat, goggles and overalls
  • First aid kit and manual, and combination pocket knife
  • Medications, toiletry and sanitary supplies and a change of clothes
  • Special needs for infants, the aged and people with disabilities
  • Water in sealed containers - ten litres per person (for three days)
  • Three days supply of canned food (plus can opener and utensils)
  • Pet food, water and other animal needs
  • Portable stove with fuel
  • Tent or tarpaulin, and blankets (woollen and thermal)
  • Money, including change for phone calls
  • Strong plastic bags (for clothing, valuables, documents, and photographs)

MAJOR FLOOD WARNING
FOR THE CULGOA, BOKHARA, BIRRIE AND NARRAN RIVERS
Issued at 11:47 AM on Sunday the 14th of March 2010
Flood Warning Number: 11
In Queensland, major flooding is occurring downstream of Dirranbandi at Narran
(Narran River) and Woolerbilla (Culgoa River). Major flood levels are expected
at Hebel (Bokhara River) later today.

The flood waters from Queensland are beginning to extend into New South Wales
where major flooding is expected in the Culgoa, Bokhara, Birrie and Narran River
Systems. Flood levels are expected to exceed those of the April 1990 floods.

The Narran River at New Angledool (manual gauge) is expected to exceed its major
flood level (2.3 metres) later today [14/03/2010].

The Culgoa River at Brenda is expected to exceed its minor flood level (4.9
metres) later today [14/03/2010].

The Bokhara River at Goodooga is expected to exceed its minor flood level (2.7
metres) later today [14/03/2010].
Predicted River Heights/Flows:

Culgoa River at Brenda - Peak near 6.0 metres around 19/3/2010
with major flooding

Culgoa River at Weilmoringle - Peak near 6.0 metres around 24/3/2010
with major flooding.
Culgoa River at Kenebree - Peak near 6.8 metres around 2/4/2010
with major flooding.

Narran River at Angledool (Manual Gauge) - Peak near 2.9 metres around
17/3/2010, with major flooding.

Bokhara River at Goodooga - Exceed minor flood level (2.7 metres)
later today [14/03/2010]
- Peak near 4.3 metres around 20/3/2010
with major flooding.

Birrie River at Goodooga - Peak near 5.0 metres around 20/3/2010
with major flooding.

Bokhara River at Goodwins - Peak near 3.6 metres around 5/4/2010

FOR THE PAROO RIVER DOWNSTREAM OF HUNGERFORD
Issued at 10:56 AM on Sunday the 14th of March 2010
Flood Warning Number: 24
The Paroo River at Willara Crossing peaked near 4.34 metres on Friday night
[12/03/2010], which is similar to the April 1990 flood. At 6 am Sunday
[14/03/2010] the river was at 4.20 metres and falling slowly.

The flood peak is expected to arrive at Wanaaring on Monday [15/03/2010] causing
major flooding also similar to the April 1990 flood. On Sunday morning
[14/3/2010] the river was at 4.66 metres and rising with major flooding.

The Cuttaburra Creek at Turra was 4.66 metres and rising at 8 am on Sunday
[14/03/2010]. Major flooding along the Cuttaburra Creek has been reported.
Similar flood levels to April 1990 are expected in this area.

Wanaaring - Peak near 5.0 metres Monday [15/03/2010] with
major flooding.

The Warrego River at Barringun automatic gauge was 3.29 metres on Sunday morning
[14/3/2010] and rising slowly with minor flooding.

The Cuttaburra Creek at Turra was 4.66 metres and rising at 8 am on Sunday
[14/03/2010]. Major flooding along the Cuttaburra Creek has been reported.
Similar flood levels to April 1990 are expected in this area.

Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Barringun (automatic gauge) - Peak near 4.6 metres around Wednesday
[17/03/2010] with moderate flooding.

Enngonia - Peak near 2.6 metres around Sunday [21/03/2010]
with moderate flooding.
Fords Bridge Bywash - Peak near 3 metres early April with moderate flooding.

MINOR TO MAJOR FLOOD WARNING
FOR THE BARWON DARLING RIVER
Issued at 8:52 AM on Sunday the 14th of March 2010
Flood Warning Number: 9
On Sunday morning the Barwon River at Mogil Mogil was 8.45 metres and at its
peak. This height is slightly above major flood level.

The Barwon River at Mungindi has fallen slightly below minor flood level and
will rise again this week.

Major flooding in the Culgoa, Moonie, Warrego and Paroo river systems is
expected to cause moderate flooding along the Barwon Darling River at Bourke and
downstream from late March onwards into April.

Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Mungindi - Rise again to minor flood level (6.1 metres) by Wednesday
17/3/10

Collarenebri - peak near 6.3 metres around 16/3/10 with minor flooding

Walgett - peak near 11 metres around 22/3/10 with minor flooding

Brewarrina - peak near 5.4 metres which is below minor flood level
around 1/4/10

Below are preliminary forecasts which will be updated as upstream peaks are
observed. They are also subject to change with any further heavy rainfall events
over the next 2 months.

Bourke - peak near 11.0 metres around 12/4/10 with moderate flooding

Louth - peak near 10.8 metres 3rd week April with major rural flooding

Tilpa - peak near 11.4 metres late April with major rural flooding flooding

Wilcannia - Reach 9.6 metres 2nd week of May with moderate flooding
- Possible further rises to over 10 metres later in May if the
Paroo overflow reaches the Darling River with similar flows
to those recorded in May 1990
