A probationary driver and two of his teenage friends have been killed in a car crash in Perth.

The two boys and a girl were all aged 17.

A female passenger is fighting for her life in hospital and another 17-year-old boy escaped with relatively minor injuries.

Police say the five teenage friends were in a BMW in the Perth suburb of Riverton last night when the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a tree.

Inspector George Putland has described the accident as an absolute tragedy which has affected many people.

"We're arranging counselling for the families as well as the police officers because of the numbers and the amount of notifications the police have had to do," he said.

Police believe speed may have been a factor.
