High Court considers cost-saving measures

Posted August 20, 2008 19:00:00

A Parliamentary committee has heard the High Court's budget is so tight it has considered scrapping the practice of stitting outside Canberra.

The High Court judges regularly hold hearings in the other capital cities.

A Parliamentary inquiry is examining the impact of Government budget cuts on agencies like the courts.

The High Court's chief executive, Andrew Phelan, says some options for saving money are not acceptable.

He says they would not make the court more efficient and they would be reducing the services it provides.

"The court has actually considered a range of other service options, operational restrictions, but feels that it would be completely anathema to implement them - for example stopping circuiting outside Canberra," he said.
