A witness of a fatal hit-and-run in Canberra has told a committal hearing he saw a car run over a woman who was lying on a road.

Sydney man Wayne Antoniazzo, 22, is accused of driving over and killing his girlfriend Amaranta Vega, 18, on New Year's Day outside a house in the northern suburb of Gungahlin.

Antoniazzo has been charged with murder.

Daryl Knowles, who lives in the street where the woman died, told the ACT Magistrates Court he heard two people arguing loudly outside his house early on New Year's Day.

He said a short time later he went out onto his balcony and saw what looked like a speed bump in the middle of the road.

Mr Knowles said he realised it was probably a woman because of her long hair.

He said a car came speeding around the corner and as the headlights shone down the street the woman rose up, seconds before being hit.

The hearing will resume on Friday.
