Only [Peter Costello] can decide whether he wants to carry the tag of "the greatest prime minister Australia never had" that was once used for Howard. Costello is undeniably the Liberal Party's best political asset now that Howard is gone, which is why so much turns on whether he recovers the will to serve, which so clearly (if understandably) wavered in the aftermath of the election.

Opposition frontbencher Tony Abbott heaps praise on Peter Costello, as speculation about the former treasurer's future in politics continues.
