The monsoonal rains arrive
During the Monsoon, large numbers of insects are swept from the north through the Torres Strait. Mosquitoes play a key role in many diseases like Japanese Encephalitis, Dengue and Malaria. They act as the vector, the carrier, transmitting the disease to potentially susceptible hosts.

The insects move with the monsoon, carried on the NW winds. The higher the wind the further the spread. Data collected suggests that low pressure systems, particularly the cyclones associated with the monsoonal troughs, help spread the mosquitoes over large distances.
