Update - Taiwan President Arrested

Chen Shui-ban

On the 11th of November, Taiwan's former pro-independence president Chen Shui-bian was arrested and handcuffed in connection with a money-laundering scandal.

Mr Chen denies any wrong-doing, claiming the new government is persecuting him at the behest of China.

But prosecutors allege he and his wife forged documents, took bribes and embezzled state funds during his eight-year reign.

Foreign Correspondent's report on the scandal in November 2007, featuring an Australian-based businesswoman who blew the whistle on the use by the presidential first lady Wu Shu Chen of fake receipts to claim public money.

Reporter Eric Campbell interviewed President Chen at some length but he insisted the money was spent on secret diplomatic missions.
