Pinchgut Opera: Vivaldi's Juditha Triumphans

Sydney’s talented opera company, Pinchgut Opera presented Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans in December 2007 for 4 nights only. Pinchgut presents glorious, yet unknown operas in beautiful venues in Sydney – getting you up close & personal to all the music and drama!

You may know Vivaldi’s Four Season but did you know Vivaldi wrote breathtaking operas? This remarkable work is one of the few operas written with a strong female hero who takes matters into her own hands- quite literally it turns out- as she cuts off her enemy’s head with his own sword. The heroic story of Judith will be the first professional performance in Australia and will include a cast of Australia’s favourite female voices.

This special work is conducted and directed from the harpsichord by Vivaldi expert Maestro Attilio Cremonesi (from Venice), with soloists Sally-Anne Russell, Sara Macliver, Fiona Campbell, Renae Martin and American counter tenor David Walker. The orchestra of the Antipodes plays on a fascinating array of period instruments and Cantillation will provide the chorus. The work has been fully staged by Mark Gaal, director, and Hamish Peters, designer.

"Pinchgut Opera is becoming a favourite pre-Christmas tradition. The fairy lights go up in Martin Place and the houselights go down in City Recital Hall as this resilient and enormously talented bunch of artists present their annual foray into neglected operatic treasures." SMH Review Dec 2006
